Bluenred, I hope you don’t mind my using your music posts as open threads, kinda.

I finished reading an excellent novel last night, “Four Spirits,” by Sena Jeter Naslund. This book centers around the civil rights movement in the mid sixties, and focuses specifically on Birmingham. (side note: Randy Newman does wonderful songwriting about the South).

But anyway, this is a good work, the author presents a story from viewpoints of many people who lived there then, including a Klansman and his wife. I really recommend it.

A quote from close to the end of the book:

“You’re a survivor, aren’t you?” Jonathan said to Stella. “Twice engaged.”

She said gravely, “That’s nothing to feel guilty about.” Then she pointed to the emblem of the department store beside them. “Fair and square,” she said. “I used to think justice and beauty could save the world.”

He asked her what she thought could save it now.

“Nothing,” she answered. “Personal strength and luck.”
