“But what was there in my dream that interests you so much? It made no sense, like all
dreams!”
“It had another sense, like all dreams, and visions. It must be read as an allegory, or an analogy.”
“Like Scripture?”
“A dream is a scripture, and many scriptures are nothing but dreams.”
—Umberto Eco, The Name Of The Rose
Oh, boy. You hit a nerve with this one. In the office a day or so ago one of the youngsters asked about the definition of a particular religious term and followed the inquiry with a second question about the origin of the belief system. That led to a discussion of science and reason as opposed to belief and vision (or dreams). The lines were defined in an effort to avoid offending believers but the conversation had a pretty clear tone.
The workplace is not a usual place for such discussions but we here have a lot of freedom to speak freely. We do choose the time and place in an effort not to offend those of a very different mindset, but when the time is right the conversations flow freely. The wonder of it all continues day by day.
It would be interesting to get the animals’ views on such matters, there at your work. ; )
In our place the humans are te tall, smooth-skinned animals.
