I thought of you when I wrote this piece, because I remembered you were a Gorecki person. One who also appreciates Lark.

I’ll make an effort to view the Speaking In Strings. Thanks for the tip. I haven’t viewed a film in something like seven months. I’m falling out of time.

I’ve been meaning to check to see whether any of your music, and/or Dan’s, is on these here intertubes. I think I’ll do that, once I get these wretched briefs out of the way.

Thanks for the write-up on, and remembrance of, Gorecki. Some good info here, much of it new to me.

As an aside, you should absolutely see the film “Speaking in Strings: Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.” You’ll like it.

I still remember my first hearing of the Gorecki. Reviews and news took me on a search for the recording. That haunting voice in the early stages lingers in my mind. The sound was astounding. I never listen to the piece without hearing something new and being moved all over again. Just like rereading a special book that music is true soul food.

I like knowing that the Third Symphony is played both at your house and mine; thereby, literally, “from sea to shining sea.” ; )

News of Gorecki’s death came in the newspaper this week. He will be missed in Possum Valley but his Symphony No. 3 will continue to be played at regular intervals.

“The Third Symphony is modal and medieval” and in that sound lies the emotional impact. Primitive and yet complex and soul fulfilling in remarkable ways. This recording may be the single most powerful piece of music I ever heard. Carmina Burana done by the right combination of orchestral and choral players comes close.

Symphonic music is most always fine for the ears. There are so few times when the music rises to the level of real mind and emotional satisfaction that Gorecki managed. He left a legacy that will long endure. May he rest in eternal piece.
