Wow, great article and plenty of good “behind the scenes” info.

The Ava Gardner Museum is showing The Night of the Iguana at this year’s Ava Gardner Festival, October 8-9. We are doing a “Reading Tennessee Williams” reading series with local libraries where they will be reading the play and this Thursday, August 5th is John Huston’s birthday—anyone who mentions his birthday will get “Buy One, Get One Free” admission. I haven’t had a chance to read much of your site yet. I agree that the changes made for the film definitely improved the thing: in particular dumping the Nazis, and transforming Maxine from a poisonous harridan into Shannon’s eventual helpmate. And the last line is a classic: “Honey, I’ll always get you back up.” ; )

Honey-pot: I LIVE this film!!! Did you look at the reviews page on my book’s website??? Where exactly but this moview do you think I got my title??? Night of the Iguana is considered by me and most Williams scholars to be the best Williams thing done. Better than the play. I’ve all but worn my DVD out!!! Scott

Well, many of these people had residual amounts of alcohol ever-present in their bodies, but at this particular point in their careers the booze wasn’t hampering their performances. And Huston generally wouldn’t shoot if any of the principals were demonstrably impaired. Some of the characters are supposed to be in various stages of inebriation in certain portions of the film, but that doesn’t mean the actors were soused in real life. It’s actually pretty rare for an actor to get drunk to perform a character who’s supposed to be drunk. The most notable exception is Martin Sheen for the scene that opens Apocalypse Now—he was intentionally made drunk by director Francis Coppola, who later got quite a bit of flack for it. Later in that same film, the character played by Sam Bottoms is supposed to be on LSD. Asked if he really was, he said no. He had taken speed, though. ; ) He too got flack for that comment, as it is a no-no in the acting community to disclose what sort of outre aids one employs to attain art.

You should try to rent the film. It’s really good.

My knowledge, such as it is, is all second-hand, pulled primarily from a large collection of film books. Unlike you, I never met any of these people, and I have never been to Puerto Vallarta. Good luck with your project, though!

I am too excited to find this posting and have no time now to even read all of it, but rest assured, you and I need to speak.
